As local newspapers close or are folded into media conglomerates, the need for local journalism has never been greater. Correspondent Dina Demetrius speaks with Lynette Clemetson, director of the Wallace House Center for Journalists at the University of Michigan, about why community newspapers are vital to democracy and how to keep them alive. Clemetson is the founding managing editor of the website The Root and a former Knight Wallace fellow who has written for the Far Eastern Economic Review, Newsweek, The New York Times, Washington Post, and NPR.
