Homelessness in the U.S. is reaching record breaking levels. The unhoused population rose to 771,480 on a single night in January 2024 – the largest number recorded since the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development started collecting data in 2007. Many cities are looking for ways to address the homelessness crisis, but providing shelter alone isn’t enough. According to JAMA, 67% of people experiencing homelessness have mental health disorders. Correspondent Dina Demetrius visits a Los Angeles County nonprofit shelter organization to learn about the challenges of providing mental health support to those in need.
