Have candidates glossed over traditional issues of substance important to voters? In the three presidential debates, veterans were only mentioned once each debate and always in the context of another subject. Nearly 3 million soldiers have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 in the Global War on terror. Hundreds of thousands of veterans have returned home with post-traumatic stress disorder. The Veteran’s Affairs Health System has been criticized for failing to adequately address this mental health crisis.
There may be hope outside the VA system through free clinics to expand treatment options. Matter of Fact correspondent Diane Roberts visited one of these unique clinics in New York and met with a Marine who struggled with PTSD for years before seeking treatment.
