U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Kelly Rodriguez served in Afghanistan as a medic treating injuries on the front lines. After five deployments, she realized she had some wounds of her own. When she first searched for answers behind her psychological scars, it was a struggle to receive a diagnosis. Currently, mental health professionals diagnose PTSD through a survey of subjective criteria, which can make it difficult to identify all patients with the disorder. Some researchers at the University of North Carolina and Emory University are working to find a better test methodology.
