Dr. Chinazo Cunningham is the principal investigator in a potentially groundbreaking study into whether marijuana use could reduce the need for addictive opioids in pain management. It’s a rare opportunity given the federal restrictions on studying marijuana. Since 1970, it’s been listed as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no medical use and there is a high potential for abuse. Despite 30 states legalizing medical marijuana, the federal government maintains there’s not enough research to suggest it has medical benefits, and this position keeps pot from being studied by researchers. Dr. Cunningham joins Soledad O’Brien to talk about her study and the Catch-22 of studying marijuana in the U.S.
