One-in-five adults in America suffer from symptoms of mental illness. Chirlane McCray, First Lady of New York City, wants to change that narrative. A strong advocate for improved mental healthcare, she knows the damage mental illness can cause firsthand. Her daughter is open about her ongoing recovery from depression and substance misuse, which McCray says has opened her eyes to how easily people dismiss the seriousness of the issue.
Using her platform as First Lady, McCray recently launched NYC Well, a 24/7/365 hotline working to connect those who suffer with the appropriate medical care. In time, she hopes the program can be a model for the state of New York and the nation. Check out our video for what could be part of mental health care’s future.
