After more than seven decades, the U.S. military will begin relocating thousands of troops off the Japanese island of Okinawa starting in 2024. Since World War II, the U.S. has operated multiple bases in Okinawa. However, several high-profile crimes committed by U.S. servicemembers against Japanese civilians have strained relations between the governments, military, and civilians. Akemi Johnson joins Soledad to discuss the past and future of Okinawa in her new book, “Night in the American Village: Women in the Shadow of the U.S. Military Bases in Okinawa.”
